Kolaveri Di : A phenomenon that took the world by storm

If you know what is ‘SoupSong’ or have taken to adding –u while conversing, you are part of the current sensation called “Why This Kolaveri Di?”

This song was uploaded on YouTube by Sony Music India officially on November 16th 2011 after a rough version was ‘leaked’ during the making of Superstar Rajinikanth’s daughter Aishwarya Dhanush directorial debut Tamil movie ‘3’.  In a matter of days the video had more than 9 million hits and counting, became the top trending word on twitter #kolaveri and the most shared video on Facebook.

Kolaveri has become such a viral rage that it has carved a place for itself in the pop culture urbandictionary. According to the website kolaverimeans — A strong urge to kill someone, popularized by Dhanush in his chart-buster 2011 song Why this kolaveri di?  The craze is so far fledged it has spawned T-shirts wave, remix versions in Gujrati and even mime-act videos.

According to National award winning actor Dhanush who penned under half an hour and sang– “Soup song” is a love-failure song and “Soup boys” are boys who have been rejected. One  of the reasons the song became such a hit is its mundane lyrics which are mostly in English with a colloquial Tamil treatment giving a funny original spin.

This peppy, catchy hummable song was composed by the 21 year old Anirudh Ravichander, Rajnikanth’s nephew. The video features a smiling Dhanush who is enjoying himself, his wife Aishwarya, Kamal Hassan’s daughter Shruthi and Anirudh grooving and enjoying while recording in a studio.

The instant stardom the song attained can also be credited to the Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan who was among the first to tweet about his addiction to Kolaveri Di.
