‘Ranveer likes to smell good when he comes on the sets’- Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone gets candid on reported beau Ranveer Singh, the Padmavati controversy and more

Q) Deepika you are always grabbing headlines either because of your craft or because of your film Padmavati’s controversy!

Being a celebrity and successful has its share of controversies. Even if I do good work there will be brickbats with the bouquets and if I do something which is different there will still be a controversy but at the end of the day I like to focus on my work.

Q) What would you like to say about the Padmavati controversy?

I would not like to comment on that. Whatever I had to say I have said on twitter. I am very happy with the film and for me Padmavati is a memorable character which is very close to my heart. You have to be very lucky to get a role like Padmavati and I am very fortunate.

Q) When you were playing the character did you feel the emotions of the famous queen?

Yes whenever we actors play a part we get under the skin of that character. When enacting Padmavati I felt her blessings were with me. When I read about the character I realized how powerful and influential queen Padmavati was. For me she is special and an example for women to look up to. Rajput women were brave and strong.

Q) How would you compare the women of today and Rajput women?

To tell you the truth there is the Rajput spirit of fearlessness and strength in all women!

Q) The controversy surrounding Padmavati is raging endlessly. What do you have to say about that?

We all have worked very hard on the film for the last two years. The makers and actors have kept in mind the sanctity of the Indian culture whilst making the film. We do not want that Padmavati, or our Indian culture is shamed or the emotions of the people hurt. It’s sad there is uproar before the film’s release. If the uproar was after the film’s release it was understandable, but people are protesting without seeing the film. It is very disheartening but there is nothing that we can do.

Q) What does the film talk about?

We have shown Padmavati and her kingdom, how dedicated she was towards her people. We have presented her in a very positive way and people will feel proud of her.

Q) But it’s heard that there are scenes with her and the Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji who invaded India during that time.

There is nothing of the sort. But I cannot reveal anything right now. All I can say is there is no truth to all stories doing the rounds.

Q) What kind of preparation went into playing Padmavati’s character?

I did a lot of research by reading books on her and sought details of her dressing sense, the way she carried herself etc. and have tried to look like her. Sanjay Leela Bhansali the director did a play in France some years back in which he highlighted Padmavati’s character. He was very interested in this subject and has done a lot of research.

Q) It is said you have been very lucky when it comes to the selection of your characters. Does anyone advise you?

I don’t think too much when I am offered a film. If I like it I take it up and don’t think whether the film will be a hit or a flop.

Q) What’s the scene on your personal life?

I get it what you are trying to ask. Everything is cool on the personal front. As soon as I get a break from work I like to be with my close ones.

Q) You wouldn’t like to talk about your relationship, right?

There is nothing new to talk about my relationship. Both of us are busy with work and happy.

Q) How special is Ranveer Singh to you?

Ranveer is special because from all the people I have met no on one has the qualities that he has. He is sensitive and emotional which is rare in men. He is very honest and I like all these traits he has. Besides he is very dedicated to his career.

Q) What would you say is his minus point?

We may not call it his minus point but Ranveer is obsessed with how well turned out he is. Like he is very particular how he smells when he comes on the sets so wears his perfume, deodorants and even sees to it that his teeth are brushed properly!

Q) Who amongst the new actors would you say is most talented?

I think Alia Bhatt, Parineeti Chopra, Harshwardhan Kapoor and Varun Dhawan will be around for a very long time!
