Besides talent and hard work luck certainly has a huge role to play in Bollywood. Some leading actresses on the stroke of luck which landed them with plum roles tinsel town in their first films and instant stardom….
Every actor hopes that their first film is a super hit, because if the beginning is good one does not have to look back. It was in 2008 when I was offered Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. I was thrilled but also very nervous, firstly, because it was my first film and secondly because superstar Shah Rukh Khan was opposite me. Anyway I put my best foot forward but was so very nervous before the release. The film went on to become a hit and I was thrilled to bits. It did a business of 116 crores, and I never had to look back!
My first film, Student of the Year, was important not only for me but also for my co-stars Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra. Since Karan Johar was the producer-director the focus on the film and us actors was all the more. Needless to say we put our heart and soul into the film. Like the film we became students and Karan Johar our teacher and would follow him like school children. We were so excited about the promotions but when the film was about to release we were numb! Thankfully our film was a hit and did a business of 85 crores. We, Sidharth, Varun and I benefited from SOTY. As far as I am concerned my film was the starting point of a great career.
For me becoming an actor was a challenge. I was so fat that I could not dream of becoming an actress. But it was Salman Khan who instilled confidence in me when he told me if I shed my weight I would be the leading lady of his film. So I set out to do what I thought was impossible, but I did it and became the leading lady of Dabangg. Working in the film was good fun but as the release date came close I was very anxious wondering if I would be accepted by the audience. But miraculously not only did the film go on to do a business of 116 crores but I was accepted with open arms. After the success of my debut film I did not look back.
Om Shanti Om was my first film which I bagged after giving an audition. The film was a big challenge because not only was I embarking on a film career but also acting with a big star like Shah Rukh Khan who I had only seen on the silver screen. I was happy and tense. Would I be able to meet the challenge? I prayed to Ganpati Bappa for the film to be a success and that I become a successful actress. I worked really hard on the film as I had a double role. But thanks to director Farah Khan and my hard work I managed to do justice to both the characters. The film not only went on to become a hit but also got me several awards for Best Newcomer. It did a business of 109 crores! I felt on top of the world!
Like every girl I also wanted everyone to praise my beauty. That is reason I said ‘YES’ to Rakesh Roshan’s Kaho Na Pyaar Hai. Before that I was a gold medalist in Economics and a working girl. I never thought of becoming an actress but when I was offered Kaho Na Pyaar Hai I said yes promptly because it was once in a lifetime chance. The film went on to become such a huge hit that both Hrithik Roshan and I became stars overnight. It did a business of 70 odd crores but the best thing was that the film stayed on the people’s for years after it released and I enjoy its success till today!
