Jab Harry Met Sejal is director Imtiaz Ali’s attempt to make a romantic comedy, and he is successful to some extent. It is about Harry (Shah Rukh Khan) originally from Punjab and now a tour guide in Europe, and Sejal (Anushka Sharma) an upper class Gujarati girl from Mumbai. The story revolves Sejal who is looking for her engagement ring that she has lost during her trip to Europe. It could be in any of the cities (Amsterdam, Prague, Budapest) she visited with her family and Harry as the tour guide. This time round she insists Harry to be her chaperone as she sets out to find the ring and in the bargain we get to visit some exotic European locales. Even though she is desperate to find the ring given by her fiancé, the ‘sister type’ Sejal as Harry calls her, slowly starts falling in love with the charming Harry who calls himself ‘chaalu’ and ‘cheap’. This results in some sparkling moments and dialogues between Sejal and Harry which bring a smile to the lips.
The performances of the two lead actors are average. Even though the Gujarati accent director Imtiaz Ali has given Anushka is very stereotypical, she has put in a breezy performance while Shah Rukh Khan as Harry is his usual self. It’s the clichéd story of falling in love on a road journey which Ali has told in some of his previous films, that makes the film a tad boring. The director who gave us the riveting Jab We Met and Highway once again had the lead couple getting romantically involved as they travel across cities to look for the ring.
Music composer Pritam’s romantic ‘Hawayien’ is a song which will have you close your eyes and swing to the beat while ‘Radha’ is a foot tapping number. The other songs like ‘Butterfly’ and ‘Safar’ are average.
Considering Ali has the skill to create beautiful moments and situations and Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka’s chemistry has worked in the past the rom com is just about average. Shah Rukh fans will enjoy the film as there is enough of him, his dimpled smile and after a long time his intense romantic gaze!
