One of the most successful entertainment channels in recent times Colors was launched in July 2008. Viacom 18’s first Hindi Genral Entertainment Channel (GEC); Colors completed 9 successful years in the Indian television this year.

Balika Vadhu: A show with a strong social message Balika Vadhu was one of the longest running shows of Color TV. The show which began with the initiation of the channel told the story of Anandi- a child bride and traced her challenging journey from that of a young girl to woman who fought social evils at every juncture of her life. The show focused on the unfortunate situation of Anandi and Jagya who were forced into marriage due to age-old customs and traditions. Oblivious to what is happening the duo are left to carry the repercussions of decisions made by elders for the rest of their lives. As the two grow up we see Jagya falling in love with another woman which breaks Anandi’s heart but eventually the circumstances in her life helps her become an independent woman. She moves on in life and marries Shiv which was a hugely popular track. The concept of woman empowerment shown through BV was highly applauded by the audience and one of the prime reasons why the show became such a raging success.
Uttaran: Shows that revolve around childhood friendships are always a treat to watch, and the scenario where a rich child befriends a poor one has its own charm. However, the story of Tapasya – the daughter of a wealthy couple and Ichcha the daughter of a poor, live-in domestic help caught the audience attention instantly as the latter used the clothes, toys and other possessions that were cast-off (Uttaran) by Tapasya. But soon jealousy creeps into Tapasya’s mind as Ichcha wins over everyone’s heart with her good nature and character. Though still friends Tapasya begins to dislike Ichcha and things get worse when Veer Singh Bundela falls for the simple Ichcha instead of Tapasya. In one of the most watched episodes ever Ichcha falls for Tapasya’s crocodile tears and emotional blackmails and gives Tapasya her Veer and claims him to be ‘Ichcha’s Uttaran to Tapasya’ paving way for one of Indian TV’s unforgettable bride swap moments.
Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha: The story of Mohan and Megha; Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha may not have had a long run like many other shows on Colors, but it was class apart and remains a crown jewel in Colors’ crown. NBTNMKK traces the journey of Mrs. Megha Vyas -a widowed, mother of two children fighting for the justice denied to her husband and Mohan Bhatnagar – a reporter who helps her in her mission. Though at loggerheads initially; Mohan and Megha comes closer thanks to Megha’s daughter Nanhi. The show also promoted the idea that even a widow, a mother of two is entitled to being happy and finding love again. The show won the hearts of 100’s and 1000’s of viewers because of the simple story line, brilliant acting and top-notch execution.
Bigg Boss: Following the Int’l show Big Brother’s format, Bigg Boss has risen to the stature of one of the most popular Reality TV Shows in India. With 10 Seasons out and the latest one in the making Bigg Boss shows how a group of 15 or more celebrities aka “housemates” live together in a specially-constructed house with no interaction with the outside world for 100+ days. During their stay they viewers get to see the house-mates at their worst but this is one reality show that makes one get overnight fame for the same. Right from mouthing abuses, to running away from the house, to marriages happening, ex-lovers meeting- BB is a show where the drama never ends and the whole nation loves this show for this very reason.
Beintehaa: Another jewel in Colors crown, Beintehaa is the love story of Zain and Aliya who are first cousins by relation; but are brought together by destiny and tied in the bond of holy matrimony due to circumstances. Zain feels Aliya snatched his freedom and Aliya feels that due to Zain she will never find true love. With the passage of time the age-old rivalry between the two changes into friendship and soon after fall in love with each other. The best aspect of the show was how Aliya was no damsel in distress but rather a strong and daring young woman. Viewers got to see the same during the shows most heart-breaking and remarkable ‘Triple Talaq’ track where Zain divorced Aliya due to misunderstandings created by a third party. Aliya fights valiantly to save her marriage, to make Zain understand that she is innocent but Zain’s stubbornness breaks them apart. Following this we saw Aliya hold her head high and walk out of Zain’s life, refusing to return even after Zain admits his mistake. Very rarely do we see a heroine fight for her self-respect without compromising one bit and Aaliya Ghulam Haider / Aaliya Zain Abdullah was one of a kind.
Madhubala Ek Ishq Ek Junoon: Iconic on-screen jodi’s come once in a blue moon and the pairing of Drashti Dhami and Vivian D’Sena was one such. Essaying the characters of Madhubala and RK the show Madhubala- Ek Ishq Ek Junoon as initially produced to celebrate 100 years of Indian cinema. Though the show boasted of showing the journey of Madhubala- a girl born on the sets of a film destined to become the biggest superstar India has ever seen; the show soon became the hate-love story of Madhubala and RK thanks to the TRP’s and RishaBala’s amazing chemistry. Though RK married Madhu to extract revenge, he soon falls in love with her and vice-versa. The story highlights the depths of their love and obsession.
24: As an entertainment channel Colors definitely set new trends on Indian television.24 – the Indian remake of the famous American series of the same name saw Bollywood star Anil Kapoor as its lead protagonist and a star cast that boasts of popular names like Anupam Kher, Shabana Azmi, Tisca Chopra, Mandira Bedi, Anita Raj, Neil Bhoopalam and many more. The show was able to successfully promote the idea of fictional shows with seasons on Indian Television. The suspense, drama, action sequences and thriller angle of the show was appreciated and highly applauded by the audience making it one of the best TV adaptations ever.
Naagin: If Colors gave the audience a show like 24 it also presented them with the fantasy supernatural drama produced by Balaji Telefilms. Two seasons down and claimed by the media and online factions of the audience as OTT and regressive; Naagin topped the TRP charts becoming the most watched series on TV. Like 24, Naagin also follows the ‘Seasons’ format and will be returning with a Season 3 soon with Mouni Roy as the lead. The chemistry of lead actors Mouni Roy and Arjun Bijlani, the acting prowess of antagonists Sudha Chandran and Adaa Khan and the saga of revenge was loved by the TRP audience and like they say one can love the show or hate it but you just can’t deny it.
Na Aana Is Des Laddo: The show brought forth various social evils such a female infanticide and practiced in India though the fictional village of Veerpur ruled by the village Sarpanch Ammaji. Sia – a young woman raises her voice against Ammaji’s atrocities and rebels against the same. She tries to make the public aware of these social evils and empower women. The show throughout its 3 years run tried to highlight the importance of raising your voice against wrong doings. Sia’s character essayed by Natasha Sharma is remembered as one of most iconic characters created by Colors TV ever.
