Bored of watching the same old saas-bahu sagas or angry young man saving and then torturing the damsel in distress or uska pati meri bhi type shows?

Get ready for a change!!!!

The last quarter of Hindi Television is gearing up to witness unique shows one after the other. Historical dramas, suspense thrillers, romance thrillers and much more are lined up for the viewers in the coming months.

Here is a list of shows that we think may change the face of Indian TV Series if the audience can rise above from the usual theatrics and give them a chance.

Prithvi Vallabh -Itihaas Bhi, Rahasya Bhi (Sony Entertainment Television)

Sony TV’s brings forth a visual extravaganza for its viewers with their magnum opus Prithvi Vallabh. Addressed as television’s own ‘Baahubali’ the show is a fictional historical war drama with intense romance. Based on a novel of the same name which tells the story of Prithiv Vallabh the kind and righteous king of Avantipur who is captivated by his neighboring King Tailap and his sister Mrinalvati; the show will see Ashish Sharma essaying the titular role while Mrinalvati will be played by Sonarika Bhadoria who shot to fame through her portrayal of Goddess Parvati in Devon Ke Dev Mahadev.

The creative genius behind shows like Devon Ke Dev…Mahadev and Siya Ke Ram -Aniruddh Pathak will don the hat of a producer for the first time. The promo is breathtakingly beautiful and captivates the viewers attention immediately. Just like the shows tagline ‘Itihaas bhi, Rahashya bhi’ the opulent finite series of supposedly 40 Episodes will witness the tale of a king who was and still continues to be a significant part of India’s history and his love-story with his captivator Princess Mrinalvati.

Ishq Mein Marjawan (Colors)

Produced by Beyond Dreams Entertainment; Ishq Mein Marjawan is a romantic & revenge suspense thriller starring Alisha Panwar and Arjun Bijlani. The show revolves around Arohi (Alisha Panwar) and Deep (Arjun Bijlani) played by Alisha and Arjun respectively. Arohi and Deep meet each other and fall in love. Soon after Arohi finds herself the primary suspect of a series of murders and ends up behind bars. Arohi’s belief in love and her perfect love-story is shattered when she realizes that everything was a lie and that she was merely a set up and that the man who set her up was none other than Deep. Arohi decides to avenge her culprits and plans her escape. When trying to find out the truth she comes across something that sends down chills down her spine. What truth did Arohi stumble across?

The teaser and the two promos aired so far has done its job stupendously. There is an air of mystery and intrigue surrounding Ishq Mein Marjawan that has grabbed the viewers interest. With viewers taking a liking towards thrillers Ishq Mein Marjawan premiering on Sept 20th surely qualifies as a show that shouldn’t be missed.

Porus (Sony Entertainment Television)

Set around 350BC and based on the life of the first defender of India; Sony Entertainment Television brings forth a larger than life tale of the brave warrior ‘Porus’. Produced by Swastik Productions; the show will revolve around that period in history when ancient Greek emperor Alexander the Great was planning to invade India. To stop Alexander from capturing India; King Porus the ruler of the Paurava Kingdom of ancient India fought with the Macedonian army of Alexander in the battle of Hydaspes. Laksh Lalwani will be seen essaying the role of King Porus while Rohit Purohit will be seen as Greek emperor Alexander. The show will also mark the come back of Rati Pandey who was last seen in Hitler Didi. She will essay the role of Queen Anusuya – Porus’ mother. Rumored to be made on a whooping budget of Rs. 500 Crore, huge chunks of this finite series has been shot in the beautiful locales of Thailand. The VFX is superior and after seeing the promo one can say with confidence that it is one of the most brilliantly used VFX’s on TV ever. We just hope that the VFX in the episodes are also as promising as in the promo. The grandeur is seen in each and every frame and Porus is definitely a historical drama that you can’t miss.

Adhura Alvida (Colors)

Harshad Chopda, Jennifer Winget and Sehban Azim coming together for a show. Sound impressive already right? Produced by Cinevistaas; Adhura Alvida is reportedly a love-story and will see Jennifer essaying the role of a widow. Sehban’s character will be seen as the husband of Jennifer’s character who will later die in the show. Also according to reliable sources Harshad will be seen essaying the role of Jennifer’s lover. While a full-fledged promo is yet to be aired; pictures from the pilot episode are making the rounds of social media, and we can’t help but wonder what the plot is all about. Expected to go on floors in October this year, the show’s star cast is what makes the show attractive as of now. We can’t wait for the promo, and we are sure that coming from Cinevistaas this show is definitely one to look out for.

Haasil (Sony Entertainment Television)

Produced by Siddhartha P Malhotra under the banner of “Alchemy Productions” Haasil starring Nikita Dutta, Vatsal Seth and Bollywood actor Zayed Khan is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated shows this year. A romantic thriller – Haasil will see two brothers – Ranvir Raichand (Zayed Khan) and Kabir Raichand (Vatsal Seth) falling in love with the same girl Aanchal (Nikita Dutta). Ranvir is a business tycoon while Kabir is his younger brother and a ladies man. Aanchal is a feisty lawyer, and if sources are to be believed the character will have shades of grey. The show will also see Bollywood yesteryear actress Sheeba essaying the role of Ranvir and Kabir’s mother. The recent promo shows Aanchal taking on the Raichand brothers and it has got us pretty excited to see how this thriller which is replacing Sony’s Beyahdh will fare. Two brothers falling in love with the same girl is not a novel subject but giving it a thriller twist and the on air promo surely makes one curious enough to know what Haasil is all about.

Ek Deewana Tha (Sony Entertainment Television)

Sony Entertainment Television undoubtedly has quite an impressive line up of shows this year. Starring Vikram Singh Chauhan who was last seen in Jaana Na Dil Se Door, Namik Paul of Ek Duje Ke Vaaste fame and actress Donal Bisht; ‘Ek Deewana Tha’ produced by Prateek Sharma under the banner of LSD Films Pvt. Ltd is another show that will premiere on the channel very soon.

So far only a 16 second teaser of the show has been aired. But that 16 seconds were powerful enough to get us hooked to the screens. With the line ‘Ek Deewana Tha’ from the hit Bollywood movie Karz’ song – ‘Ek Hasina Thi…Ek Deewana Tha’; being played as a background score, the teaser sets the tone of this upcoming romantic thriller series with simply the title of the show. Wondering how? Well at first we see the words Ek Deewana Tha (written in Hindi) appearing on a chilly background. The words Ek and Tha are in red with the hindi alphabet “क” of एक (Ek) being depicted as a heart. It’s the word Deewana (दीवाना) that grabs your attention because it is formed in what looks like icicles but, a few seconds into the teaser and we can see an open pair of hand (palms) appearing on either end of the word. The heart in the word Ek and the feel of the teaser clearly depicts this as rom-thriller but the hand in the word deewana makes quite an impression as it looks like somebody is being captured or held captive.

2 historical shows and 4 shows belonging to romance and suspense thriller genre one can definitely breath a sigh of relief that kitchen politics and saas-bahu saga’s are fast becoming a thing of the past. Good riddance!!!
